“TOM YUM” or as we call it on our menu, spicy lemongrass soup, is definitely one of the top three well known dishes from Thai cuisine. Tom yum is to Thai cuisine as chicken noodle soup is to American — total comfort food. The flavors distinct to this soup is spicy & sour. The main ingredients are lemongrass, galangal, kaffir lime leaves, lime juice, chili peppers & fish sauce. It generally is always made with shrimp and you’d probably see it on other menus as “tom yum goong” (goong = shrimp). In Thailand, you’ll almost always find it made with river prawns with the heads on giving the broth amazing depth. It’s so delicious, but sometimes numbingly spicy.
On Pad Thai Too’s menu we have the option to get it with shrimp, chicken, veggies or tofu so everyone can enjoy it. Plus, we do not use fish sauce of course. If you’d like to make a meal of it, try our dish called “Tom Yum Yai” (yai = big) which is a large bowl of the lemongrass soup broth with noodles. Another dish worth trying if you like tom yum is the dish called “PO TAK” which is a seafood stew with a heartier lemongrass based broth with the addition of roasted chili paste.
